Show Travel Times For Southbound Muskegon-Area U.S. 31 Motorists

Friday, March 4th, 2011

WEST MICHIGAN — Highway drivers looking for the quickest routes now can get travel time information from the state’s electronic message signs — including one along U.S. 31 in Muskegon.

The signs can be found at six locations throughout Muskegon, Ottawa and Kent counties on highways including U.S. 31, I-96, U.S. 131 and I-196.

“You’ve seen them in Detroit and other big cities,” said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman John Richard.

The signs will show travel times for other major expressway routes and alternate routes during construction, Richard said.

Travel times will be updated every five minutes from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., so if an accident is causing a delay, drivers will be able to see that, Richard said.

“The signs are located in advance of major interchanges so that drivers can use the travel-time data to make educated decisions about which routes to take,” said MDOT West Michigan Transportation Operations Center Manager Suzette Peplinski.
