Alternative investment is a term typically used by investors to describe investments other than stocks and bonds. Strategies commonly classified as alternative investments include private equity, leveraged buy-out (LBO) funds, arbitrage strategies, hedge strategies, and “event driven” strategies. Some people also classify real estate and venture capital in the alternative investment category. The benefits of alternative investments include potentially higher returns, reduced volatility, diversification benefits resulting from low correlation with other investments, and in some cases more liquidity than some other investments like real estate and venture capital.

A Kalamazoo company is one of five Michigan firms that received funding from the state to hire ex-Pfizer Inc. workers, according to a press release today from the Michigan Economic Development Corp.
Single Source Procurement LLC, in Kalamazoo, was founded by an ex-Pfizer employee in 2003 and provides specialized purchasing and sourcing services to clients of the Southwest Michigan Innovation Center, according to the state.
The company plans to hire one former Pfizer employee with its $80,000 loan.
“Single Source Procurement is a great example of how a company based in Kalamazoo can make an impact across the state of Michigan,” said Ron Kitchens, chief executive officer of Southwest Michigan First. “By supporting their growth, we are creating jobs in the community and across the state.”
